In Himachel Pradesh, you have Manali, Kasol, Dharamsala and Shimla.

Varanasi is mind blowing. It's a very holy city and I would need to write a page to describe it.

Rishiskesh in Uttaranchal is pretty groovy (that's where the Beatles went). You'll probably want to check out the Taj Mahal in Agra... you can see everything in one day then take a night train to Jaipur, Rajasthan... from there you have a lot of place to see. My favorite is Pushkar... very shanti. Afterwards, work your way down to Udaipur, then Mumbai (Bombay).

If I had to choose a place to chill, it would be the state of Goa. There are so many cool beaches and towns that support the backpacker culture. Don't miss out on Palolem, Anjuna, Arambol, Vagator and Panaji. Pushing further south is Kerala; where another beautiful world of beaches and culture mingle in the sand.

Personally I think the Golden Temple is much more beautiful then the Taj itself, and the atmosphere there is amazing

I've spent time in Goa 30 years ago.

At that time people would end there journey in Goa.

I rented a small three room home on the beach
for $5.00 a week or something like that. Someone would bring me water and fresh fruit every day. I would walk on the beach and stop at a small restaurant and eat fresh fish, veges and rice. Everyone celebrated in a full moon beach party. There was a popular saying Boomshankar?? Anyone know what that meant, I understood it was about and American living in the area.

At that time young and older travelers from the west and Europe would end there journey in Goa.
They would talk about the triangle journey from the north this could have been Katmandu, west (lakes and living on boats)
and end in Goa. After living in these other places for two to three months and move to the next place. They would move from these other areas because of the monsoon (not sure) as I recall.

Does anyone know the areas they were talking about? Today are travelers taking these journeys? Where can you live on the beach, mountains or lakes for little money?

Thank you, my precious ones who journey…

      Adios…

Yea, Srinagar (Dal lake) is famous for its house boats. About 10 years ago, it costed around $2 per day to rent and live in one.
There's lots to see in and around Srinagar (if you dont mind the elevated threat level stuff they feed everyone).
          www.koausa.org/Nature/Images/index.html

(not listed there is chandanwadi, which is on the way to amarnath, and is a cool ice-bridge that you need to cross. Prolly wont be there now, or will disappear soon with global warming). Amarnath has a Shiv ling made of ice (from cave water dripping down).
I totally loved visiting all those places years ago, having kids run upto you with freshly plucked sweet apples which they'd gladly give you and ask for pens and pencils etc in exchange. Verinag was very calm and beautiful.
The char chinar (4 chinar trees) had gone down to three plus a dying stump.
The food (mostly non-veg) was amazing. Apples, almonds, pine-nuts and walnuts grow plenty there.

Ahh Srinagar, brings back sweet memories! I was there 20 years ago, stayed on Nagin Lake, and all of Kasmir was incredibly beautiful... and peaceful then. but I remember talk amoungst the locals that war was stirring, and in their hearts they sided with Pakistan as they are Muslim...

I wonder what its like there now

Wonderful, Kashmir oh yes, thank you all. And Goa, is there another new place like Goa around India?

I'm getting ready to attend Burning Man in the Nevada desert. I leave Saturday for a week.

          Check it out... burningman.com

          Until I return...

Manali, for sure... see for yourself! www.kumbhmela.org/KM52manali.html after my 9th visit I can say it is the best... Unless you are there in January, then go to the Kumbh Mela festival in Allahabad, (or a special festival in Hardwar in April of 2010) it is the most amazing place on the planet...
