Hi .... *waves* .... I am planning to go in Jan... w/ a group of friends. We are 4 right now, none of us have been to India .... and we thought it would be great to explore India, some of it by train.... I would love to hear all 'bout your fav. Indian experience... We have not decided which part of India to explore ... We are all spiritual, nature lovers, and Free Spirited .... Peace and Blessings .... (yes, we love poi spinning, music, art .... not too many touristy things, the real deal vs. commercialized version) ....

    Ohhh, soo many options. :-)
I myself am not able to give you any tips, because I only know (and love) the mountains and that's not really possible in Jan.

    But try here:
    www.indiamike.com/india/

I got a lot of useful tips there, just be aware that there are many different people with very different tastes active in the forum, so not every recommendation might be right for you. But they are very helpful.

        Hi Sunshine,
Well, i can tell you many great places to go... (I live in CA, but have been to India 9 times and am now a Hindu) and yes, Lars is right, January prevents going onto the wonderful mountains, Manali, Uttarkashi, Lei and Kashmir! (However, when challanged to do it, I did get to Gangotri in January in a 4-wheeldrive jeep, nevermind...)
January is the time of the Magh Mela in Allahabad... It's like a small Kumbh Mela festival (ha ha ha small, maybe a half million monks camped by the Ganges River), with Sadhus, Naga babas and Gurus all camping together for a month. There are special processions to the waterfront at the new/full moon and at the alignment of the planets... like an ancient harmonic convergence! I liked to party with the Naga babas... Good Charis! www.kumbhmela.org/
PS. Kishore is near the Magh Mela, if you plan day trips from there, you can see Him in Varanasi (also Kashi Benares), and/or go to Agra (Taj Mahal), Sarnath (Buddhist center) or Khajuraho (erotic art on temples).
Also, a bit touristy but still a blast is the golden triangle, Delhi - Jaipur - Agra... it is real, for sure, even the Taj is kinda cool, and in Jaipur you can ride an Elephant up to the 1000 year old fort, hmmmm, could be a romantic spot. (HINT:Last year, I got Engaged in Jaipur)
By Train is a wonderful way to see the country, if you got lots of time. Get 1st class and try to get the lockable 4 person or 2 person sleeper compartments. There's a great night train from Delhi to Allahabad, saves you a hotel room! Going longer distances is too slow, i went from Hardwar to Bangalore one time... nevermind... www.indianrail.gov.in/
By Plane you can get many cheap flights and you can get all india air passes that get you to any city you like (in a region) for a 1, 2 or 3 week rate... (PS. If you get an Indian national to buy for you it may be cheaper to get with ruppees...) www.indianairlines.in/scripts...mes.aspx
In Poona, there is still a large Meditation Resort at the former OSHO/Rajneesh ashram, it's tons of fun, cool westerners... Many meditation classes and events, also social parties and they have a swimming pool/hot tub/sauna/tennis/weight room/etc. www.osho.com
Goa is a huge beach party scene... the vibe is different from most of India, as it was Portugese not English, as most of India was. Lots of cool western and Indians party there, I hear that booze costs less there so many Indians go there to party!
Bangalor is now Banglaru, but going back to the old name is great, and they have many old temples, parks and also modern shopping areas... (I don't mind admitting there are some damn good deals, custom sewn silk shirts @ $5, etc) The community is very modern, fun side of south India, some Ashrams to see nearby are the Sai Baba ashram, the ISCON temple and Vishwa Shanti ashram... www.vishwashantiashram.org/homeindex.htm
Mysore has a palace that you can tour thru and see how the Maharaj lived! There is a wonderful Temple on the Hill overlooking the town... (Chamundeshwari Temple) There are Sandlewood statues of incredible detail that were too hard to resist getting, so beware.... :-)
Hmmmm, well that ought to keep you busy, lol... You will make many friends along the way, many surprises will seem to unfold into miracles, you will see... Relax and enjoy... (and watch your wallet, one eye on your bags, the other on the door!) just kidding, have fun...

        :-) Blessings to you,
        Dave (Jagannatha Das)

So much to see and explore, my last trip was only 1 month, but usually 3 months feels right, feel it out... Get an open return ticket if possible.

          Thank You ...............................!

          This is so useful ....

How far is Allahabad from Bangalore? Do you think Bangalore is the most central point to start out (we are now a group of 7 peeps -)

Where in Ca are you? I am in Venice ....:)

I just can't thank you enough, You So Rock!

          Peace and Om Shanti Blessings,
          Sunshine

Well, Bangalore is not too near Allahabad,Allahabad is really closer to New Delhi... Also consider flying into Delhi and out of Bangalore. Starting in the north, with the Festival in January, is best... you can get down to Banglore later... anytime is good there... and best to do your shopping at the last stop, ie. Bangalore. Delhi is a good central start point actually, with Jaipur Agra and Allahabad to see... we stopped in both Poona and Goa enroute to Bangalore... making a sweep, north to south...
and I'm in Northern Ca, near SF...
PS. When you get to the mela, first go into Allahabad City, and get a hotel, it's 5 miles to the festival, but there are no places to stay at the festival. Recommended hotels: Milan Hotel, Yatrik and many more... this link will help you... :-) www.kumbhmela.org/KM28links.html

You may have Darshan i.e. see my spiritual teacher-Guruji whereever He is available. He moves arround. His main seat is at Amarkantak(MP). His name is PP Barfani Dadaji. Visit tribe with the same name. If you quest is spiritual, my suggestion may prove correct.
