I'm on the last leg of my 6 mo. round the world trip and will be a month in India. Got in two days ago and Leaving Delhi for Dharmasala tomorrow (anybody want to get together?). And I've been fortunate to play out in Laos and Thailand so far on the trip and would love to at the very least connect with some dance scenes and communities while in India and would love to share my beats with them as well.
I'm sampling and being inspired by the sounds and music I encounter on my travels and fuse it all, through my little travel laptop, into my productions. I'm most interested in the dance tracks, dance scenes, and dance parties that encorporate healing, conscious, or social elements.
But I'll always settle for some great music and vibes to just get the sweat on. It doesn't matter what the party looks or sounds like though, of course, uniquely indian would be cool, whatever that means! (indian music, indian causes, indian location, indian dj's/musicians, expats of india, indian spirit/religious music, indians, indian hippies). And, "yes" I like Bhangra.
Many of my projects sample events of humanitatian interests like music from mine victims in Cambodia or hurricane relief in Fiji. I hope to get these tracks posted when I finish the trip in the coming months to then be posted to download for a donation to these various causes to raise funds and awareness. See here for some idea of what I mean:

So if you also know of any particular indian events or causes or cultural experiences I should creatively engage please let me know.
My dj music and even productions are mostly deep techy funky house breaks and lounge tossed about with some world beats and sprinkled with conscious dust. I know there's a healthy psy movements such as Goa and although i appreciate the sound and mind states it's not really my cuppa'. Anything else going on? Or else maybe I need convincing that the psy stuff is REALLY going on!
peace in the middle east,

Re: Dj'ing, Dancing, and Creatively Giving in India
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 12:08 PMHi,
while in Dharamsala go up to the village Bhagsu, you can easily reach it by foot from McLeod Ganj. You might find some PsyTrance people there. Or maybe they already moved on to Kasol or Manali. Mostly Israelis, though. Some of them very rude, some of them very nice, not very much inbetween.
I will be arriving in Manali/Vashisht around 16th June for the full moon party after travelling the mountains a bit, so I guess we won't meet. -

Re: Dj'ing, Dancing, and Creatively Giving in India
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 12:33 PMin dharamsala area:
psytrance is in dharamkhot
jam sessions (i.e. drums, guitars, singing and whatnot) are in bhagsu
but really you should just go to kasol or old manali if you're looking for an outlet to make electronic music -

Re: Dj'ing, Dancing, and Creatively Giving in India
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 5:22 PMactually I'd be curious if there is any good house or hip hop happening anywhere as well. there is obviously that poppy stuff, and psytrance really does zero for me...
something that was really cool in Kolkata is that there are still a bunch of shops that sell vinyl. you can go crate digging for some weird shit! unfortunately, AFTER I got back I discovered this awesome era of bollywood music that is all funk, disco and spy music - when I go back I'm gonna load up on records....

Re: Dj'ing, Dancing, and Creatively Giving in India
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 12:04 AMThere's a lot going on in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, much more so than in the backpacker places. Not quite sure what you mean by uniquely Indian vibe--I guess you mean as opposed to the backpacker scene. For that, again, you will need to go to a big city! But if it's a uniquely Indian vibe you want then I guess you wouldn't be able to go as a non-Indian since your foreignness would destroy the vibe, non? Hahaha seriously, I assume you are trying to subtly say you aren't so into the Israeli dominated psy trance parties and you want something a bit less 'spiritual Disneyland' and a bit more 'everyday average old India'. For that, be prepared to go to a somewhat posh club or bar, possibly in a 5 star hotel, wear nice shoes (no flip flops allowed), spend lots of money for entrance/drinks and see lots of beautiful people. It's got ups and downs, but at least you don't have to worry about getting arrested/bribed.
If you want bhangra or Hindi pop, any old club in Delhi will be playing it. If you want like house or breaks or or whatever then you will need to seek out specific events. Will you still be in Delhi tonight (Friday)? If so, send me a message and I will give my recommendations. -

Re: Dj'ing, Dancing, and Creatively Giving in India
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 8:58 AMThanks for the input ya'll. I'm actually in McLeod Gang at the moment and will make my way to Bhagsu (probably not tonight, got a 15 hr. bus ride to recover from first) and then probably on to Manali as well. So we'll see what we can dig up.
Not sure about Mumbai and Bangalore for this trip cause' I'll probably stay in the north. Maybe next time.
And Lars, I like it up here...nice and cool with beauty and kindness to boot so If I'm still in the area around the 16th I'll let you know.
